EXPERIENCE KALS-MATREI
Where tradition is at home & hospitality is lived
East Tyrol has managed to preserve many of its traditions in their original form right up to the present day.
This can also be seen and felt at the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei and gives the region its unique charm.
It is not only the typical traditional costumes of the region that characterise the preserved customs, but also the architecture, especially in Kals a. G., has also been preserved. The rural and rural character characterises the area and radiates a rustic charm.
First ascent of the Großglockner
The first ascent of the Großglockner on 27 July 1800 was achieved by an expedition led by Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver Graf Salm-Reifferscheid. Johann Stüdl, a member of the expedition, built the first mountain hut in the Eastern Alps, the Stüdlhütte, and thus laid the first foundation stone for the development of tourism and the importance of mountaineering in the region.
1st mountain guide association in the Alps
Kals became the centre for climbing the Glockner. The first mountain guide association in the Alps was founded as early as 1869 on the initiative of Johann Stüdl. Under the chairmanship of Pastor Andreas Lercher, the Kals mountain guides were well organised with statutes and guide regulations and made a name for themselves far beyond the borders.
